Apple iPod Heads to Auction at Sotheby’s

A Factory-Sealed First-Generation iPod Comes to Sotheby’s This July

Shortly after the iPod’s 25th anniversary, a 2001 iPod – the holy grail of iPods – becomes the first factory-sealed unit ever offered at Sotheby’s

A cultural icon returns to the spotlight this July at Sotheby’s New York: a first‑generation Apple iPod, model M8513 – factory‑sealed and untouched since its manufacture in December 2001.

Arriving just after the Apple iPod’s 25th anniversary, this extraordinary piece is not just vintage tech – it is a pristine time capsule from the moment Apple reinvented how the world listens to music. With a starting bid of $10,000, it enters the market at a time when demand for early Apple artifacts is surging; in 2025, a sealed first‑generation iPod sold for a world record at $40,000.

Unveiled by Steve Jobs in October 2001, the original iPod marked Apple’s bold entry into the digital music era, pairing minimalist Jonathan Ive design with a revolutionary 5 GB hard drive – “1,000 songs in your pocket.” Today, fully sealed units are virtually nonexistent. This example is the first factory-sealed iPod ever offered at Sotheby’s, making the auction a landmark event for collectors, technologists, and cultural historians alike.

In an age dominated by streaming, the iPod stands as the device that changed everything – paving the way for the iTunes Music Store and ultimately the iPhone and Apple’s modern ecosystem. The upcoming sale is more than an auction; it is a rare chance to own the spark that ignited Apple’s 21st‑century renaissance.

The auction will take place on July 2027 at Sotheby’s in New York City (USA).
A moment of tech history is about to go under the hammer – and the world will be watching.

Apple iPod 1st Generation: Product History

2001: Market Launch
The first Apple iPod was unveiled to the public by Steve Jobs (1955–2011) at an Apple Special Event on October 23, 2001. The iPod went on sale in the United States on November 10, 2001. Initially, it was available only with a 5 GB hard drive.

The minimalist white hardware design was created by Jonathan Ive (b. 1967), then head of Apple’s industrial design team, and received a Red Dot Design Award in 2002.

2002: Product Line Expansion
On March 21, 2002, Apple expanded the lineup with a 10 GB iPod model. The first-generation iPod was succeeded by the second-generation iPod on July 17, 2002.

Significance for Apple
The iPod marked Apple’s decisive entry into the digital music business. Together with iTunes, Apple created a closed ecosystem of hardware (iPod), software (iTunes), and online music distribution (iTunes Music Store, from 2003). This interplay made legal digital music purchases mainstream and contributed significantly to Apple’s turnaround in the early 2000s. The iPod thus became a symbol of Apple’s resurgence and paved the way for the iPhone.

Apple iPod 1st Generation: Auction

The highlight of my Apple collection is this factory-sealed first-generation iPod, which will be auctioned at Sotheby’s in New York City in July 2027. It is the first sealed iPod ever offered at Sotheby’s – previously, the auction house had sold only iPods that once belonged to Karl Lagerfeld –  and at any other major international auction house.
